What is a community foundation?
A Community Foundation is a public charity created by and for the people in a local area. It enables people with philanthropic interests to easily and effectively support the issues they care about in their own community.
The Community Foundation of the Brazos Valley has an in-depth knowledge of our community. We remain alert to emerging needs of our community in order to respond quickly and effectively. We convene groups (including donors, nonprofit leaders, and elected officials) to work together on community problem-solving, and we foster greater giving and volunteerism throughout the Brazos Valley.
Established in 2003, the Community Foundation of the Brazos Valley has helped dozens of individuals, families, and corporations establish and achieve their philanthropic goals and match them with worthy nonprofits and students needing their support.
Community foundations have a long tradition of helping bring about thoughtful, effective change in communities across America. The first community foundation was started in 1914, and there are now more than 650 throughout the United States and 39 in Texas.
How do foundations work?
Community foundations help individuals, families and businesses determine their philanthropic goals and establish charitable endowment funds to meet them. Donors can contribute a variety of different assets into their community foundation funds and receive the maximum tax advantages allowed under the law. The funds are then professionally managed so that the endowed assets will grow over time and all reporting paperwork and tax filings are completed by the foundation.
Grants are awarded based on the donor’s wishes and transferred to recipients that meet the donor’s charitable goals. Donors may be as actively involved in the selection of the nonprofit organizations or scholarship recipients as they like, and grants can be made in the donor’s name or anonymously.
The Community Foundation of the Brazos Valley offers a variety of different types of funds and helps donors choose the fund type that best fits their charitable goals. Setting up a fund with the community foundation takes only minutes and makes philanthropy fun, flexible and effective.
